TO TAN OR NOT TO TAN

New topic for this week: Suntanning

Hello my blog surfing friends. I really need your help on this subject. Do you listen to the experts and lather the SPF 150 sunscreen on when you step outside or do you enjoy the rosy pink kiss of mother nature? Maybe lathering up is an easy thing for most of you to do, but, I LOVE TO BE TAN! I love the sun, I love how warm it feels on my skin, how it changes my hair lighter and my skin darker. It's the exact reverse of my winter self. I will even admit, though this is very embarrassing, that sometimes, in the cold dark Idaho winter days , I put on my sunglasses and hat disguise and sneak into the nearest tanning salon. I know it's not right, I feel so ashamed, but ahhhh the warmth of the bed, the light that is more therapeutic than I can describe. Winter disappears, if just for a moment, well 8,9, or a 10 minute session. I come out just a little pink, I really don't even do it that often, maybe 2 or 3 times in a month at most. I know I am trying to justify my sin but I NEED THE SUN.
Then comes summertime. The boat, the lake, the ocean, Lake Powell, the backyard! Give me sun and Hawaiian Tropic Tan Oil (SPF 0-2). I really am not exaggerating, I need it like a drug!
So tell me, Do you think that I am slowly killing myself like, once again, the fear exploiting media wants me to believe or do you think the SPF 150 is warranted?
What say you?

Hi Holly - Good Topic! I'm with you. I think everyone looks better with a tan - myself especially! But I was talking to my neighbor who is a P.A. for a dermatologist and he has definate opinions on the sun and it's dammages. He said the rays of the sun have changed from the days when we were kids. It's a lot more damaging and in a non-judgemental way he cautioned me.- Telling me of some of the dammages he sees on a daily basis. Reagan tans beautifully so I've never been too worried about her in the sun, but he said I should protect her with the sunscreen still the same. Tanner, I know I have to lather it on to protect his fair skin. I think my kids look so cute with tans but some of his arguments make sense and I'm going to use more caution this summer, (especially with Reagan). I'm also going to find out more and get back to you. I personally am not worried about my own damaged skin but if I'm messing up my kids - I'm worried. I also heard that anything with a SPF of 20 or above is what you should use and they all work the same after that number - I don't know, - I just heard it on the news.

Well, as a freckle-face, I don't really have the option of getting tan or not. When I think I'm tan,I'm really just red. I am tired of my awesome white legs so I recently started using some of that fake tan lotion crap and... two weeks later, my legs are HOTT. But then I saw some news report that said a group of scientists are trying to decide if the junk in those lotions will give me cancer. So either way I'm going to die. It's been nice knowing you.

SPF for me. I have had some scary moles so I try and be good. I do get a spray on tan for my Hawaii trips. Crazy I know..

Alright Holly here is my take on tanning. I feel that we all come to earth to live and die. I think that in the beginning of time God created the SUN. I think he wanted us to be in the sun whenever possible. Oh how I LOVE the sun! I wish I grew up on the beach so I could live under the HOT sun everyday. I look at my legs right now and they are as glowing as the sun...time to hit the tanning bed.

I am so with you on this Holly and guilty as sin!  I know what you mean when you say it's like a drug. In the summer I find myself trying to get things done quickly in the morning so I can get outside during peak sun hours. I will even admit that I have been laying out the past two days and I'm quite pleased with the base I'm getting. I am a dermatologist worst nightmare.
